maps
current status: all my creative juice is spent in research rn; I don't have enough leftover to map skill issue
goals: map the song with a full heart, cursor momentum, fluid and bouncy aim control, intuitive but vivid rhythm, organic visuals, non-trivial reading
mentored by Uberzolik and Halfslashed
thankful to many more

random list of thoughts
- i am in your walls
- unless you explicitly decide otherwise, the end goal is the gameplay experience
- any particular visual style / theme has a certain palette of types of gameplay u can make within it, and it is good to vary visual styles in order to allow yourself more variety in the gameplay
- i think the most rewarding approach in making a map is to strive for an artistic goal while at the same time making it as enjoyable / fun to play as you can for a player that "doesn't get it"
- it seems like often people will fall into some kind of pitfall or misconception when they're beginning with mapping, and then grow out of it, but maintain a bias in the opposite direction for the rest of their career. i think this is cute, but if you've had such an experience and you care about some kind of "objective balance" in your approach to mapping then it's something to think about
- one kind of "comfy" gameplay requires giving the player time to breathe, rather than having an idea of how you want their movement to be at all times relentlessly. in this regard having a clear intention for the player's movement with every object can in fact be a bad thing. it has its place e.g. high-paced kiai stuff, but it can make what was meant to be a fresh calm section into something cloying instead
- when there are large rhythm gaps pay extra attention to the expectations of the player
- you should balance confidence and intent with open-mindedness and willingness to change perspective
- if ur feeling uninspired make a triangle, never fails

big general thing that I wrote at some point. general means less useful in practice
DISCLAIMER: be free, do what you want to do, you might disagree with me on something, or on everything
to develop as a mapper: finish lots of maps, keep getting explained feedback from different people with experience
addendum: one thing missing in this guide is that you also need to play and look at a large variety of maps, for two reasons: to steal ideas and get inspiration, and to gain contextual awareness so that you can make an informed decision about what your preferences are

- understand what people value in maps, and learn how to judge it yourself (in your own maps and in others)
interpret the reasons people give for something being effective (like spacing for emphasis, repeated patterns for song representation, e.t.c.) as things to look at in a map when judging whether it works well or not, rather than rules that make a map good if they are followed and bad if they are not followed
be aware that a logical explanation might not be an accurate description of how something works out in practice
-- - learn to pay attention to, and control these things while mapping
you need lots of practice: the subconscious is important because it's basically impossible to make spacing,rhythm,e.t.c. all work well by thinking logically about everything every time you place a note
-- - figure out which things you want to care about in your mapping; what is your goal?
both why you want to make maps (ranked? tournaments? e.t.c.) and what you want to value in your maps (looks cool? unique player challenge? e.t.c.)
without knowing this you can spend a long time doing nothing, but it doesn't have to be some concrete or unchanging decision
do understand what other mappers care about, and be open to changing your own values based on what you see
-- - don't take anyone or anything too seriously
