Why osu! players should learn about osu! history
osu! was released on September 16 2007. Since then, there has been an abundance of events that shaped osu! to what it is today.

From players who changed the way osu! is meant to be played and inspired other players to follow in their footsteps.

Mappers who create the beatmaps and inspect each other’s maps both as a way to keep the players engaged and pushing the limits of what is possible for the elite.

Rank and scoring system changes that define and change the meta across both solo and pro play, with Ranked Score, ppv1 and v2 influencing the global leaderboards and several records (sometimes in a bad way which is why looking back is important to fix the current issues that we have now) and ScoreV2 influencing the tournament scene bringing an even more important balance between accuracy and combo.

Content creators who bring osu to a wider audience and also foster communities for people to hang out, such as casual music/anime lovers, artists(graphics and music, both digital and physical work) tournament players/staff, mappers, bot developers etc.

Learning from the past allowed me to see so many amazing things, and even the ones that don’t look so amazing I still can learn a lot from it. Players I look up to as inspiration like Cookiezi when I started playing, and players I also can identify as having a similar playstyle or habit such as Bikko, Umbre and Chaoslitz who are accuracy demons in their high level gameplay, and SS or Quit, Sleepteiner, Zalaria and kevin3333g who commit to such a high SS rank count and having an absurdly high profile accuracy.

I look up to mappers such as Pishifat and Charles445 who built upon the foundations of osu! mapping and then taking influence from jonathanlfj, happy30 and Crissa as my preference is long consistency maps as for me, long maps with easily defined elements such as simple jumps, bursts and streams are the purest forms of osu!.

This is also why I encourage mappers and players old and new to look up any part of osu! history, even if it’s fairly recent so that you can learn about who you’re initially inspired by, who are you the most similar to and which player/mapper do you want to most closely resemble. It will reflect better who you currently are as a mapper/player (or both) and who you want to be in your future osu! career.

Beginner's Guide to HR

I will be using DigitalHypno’s osu!phd flowchart and his HR explanation to illustrate the points that I will be mentioning.

The “Hard Rock” mod amplifies ALL of the difficulty settings up to 10 (Circle Size is the only thing in the editor that can only go up to base 7 but changing the .osu file can make it go up to 10). Circle Size is multiplied by 1.3x, and the rest such as AR, OD and HP are multiplied by 1.4x. This therefore makes it arguably the hardest mod in the game to learn not only through its sheer scaling of the difficulty but the amount of different skill sets it tests which I will explain in greater detail.

In DigitalHypno’s video the skills required for learning HR boils down to precision, reading speed and accuracy, because of the aforementioned difficulty settings being increased. (Opinion: The reason why I agree with Hypno that HR is more overloaded than say DT is that HR tests skills from completely different branches (and cranks up the consistency skill up to 10, no pun intended) rather than DT which shares a lot of speed-related skills.)

Precision branches from cursor control and focus, because there is less room for “aim error” if you imagine aiming in the center of the circle and the circle size/radius is the leniency (how far away from the center) you’re allowed to go out of before you miss.

Reading speed which I believe to be the main concern for players entering HR branches from pattern processing, speed(general) and rhythm sense. The key element to good reading speed is being able to predict the pattern well ahead of time, due to 1) identifying repeating elements of the track (if any) and 2) of the circles and sliders that were placed by the mapper since unless you have an insane reaction time, there is usually not enough time to “see” the patterns.

Accuracy branches from rhythm sense, pattern processing and finger control. At the maximum setting of OD 10, it is extremely hard to get good acc unless you’re able to master the rhythm of the song and knowing exactly how to tap said rhythm in order to get all 300s. DO NOT USE OFFSET IF YOU DON’T KNOW HOW IT WORKS. If you want to anyway, here’s a good rule of thumb (and only use this if you know for certain that it’s not a reading issue or a “wait I tapped early/late on one part and the rest were fine” issue).
Above Unstable Rate there are a set of error numbers as seen here.
The number on the left corresponds to the averages of early hits and subsequently the number on the right for late hits. As an example, for error numbers -11ms 7ms with an UR of 90, I can then use the error numbers and with math, (11+7)/2 would give me a +-9ms off-centeredness of my hits. Then I would use the offset to -2ms so in theory on my next play assuming similar conditions the error numbers would be -9ms 9ms with a similar UR.

If you’re able to notice a trend, these three main elements have an element of consistency with precision partly branching from cursor control, reading speed from pattern processing, and accuracy from both finger control and pattern processing. If you feel like you don’t have consistency without HR, then HR is most likely going to be way too hard for you and you should work on your consistency before going back to attempt it. Ironically, the exact opposite can also be true where if you’re reading this as a HR main, if you’re consistent at HR but outside of it it feels like you don’t know how to play the game on lower ARs. Please learn to read lower AR too because it’s also a major part of pattern processing.

Once you've improved your consistency to a point where you're comfortable, then you can improve on the main skills required for HR in isolation to get yourself ready for it but at some point you should dive straight into it (ideally when you have 2/3 of the skills down e.g. precision + reading speed) since there's only so much you can do improving each skill in isolation when HR tests them all together.

Tonehh mentioned in one of his tweets that learning any AR outside of your comfort zone (whether it’s AR8 HD, EZ or HR mods) it’s a matter of brute force until you’re able to adapt to the finer details and I’m blessed/cursed to start with HR early in my osu days because it means I’m used to the AR while others can’t in low rank tourneys but with the tradeoff of not being able to read low AR until somewhere last year where I forced myself to learn it and now I’m an all-rounder with an HR niche.

If you want some math to describe how hard HR really is, at the maximum difficulty stats AR 10 means that the circles will last on screen for 450ms. OD 10 is a +-19.5ms hit window for a 300. Combining these two, to get a 300 on a single note (assuming no overlaps like bursts and no prior knowledge of the song/map) it takes (450/2)+19.5=244.5ms to see the note THEN hit it without going too late. On the Human Benchmark website, the median reaction time is 273ms.
