difficulty naming scheme
Beginner → equivalent to Easy
Novice → equivalent to Normal
Apprentice → equivalent to Hard
Professional → equivalent to Insane
Expert → equivalent to lower * Extra
Master → higher than Expert (more equivalent to Extreme)
Virtuoso → top diff with upper end of mechanical difficulty
Challenge → above virtuoso top diff; where I think the name fits better; a gimmick
Special → gimmick
rationale: osu! conventions for difficulty naming range from value judgments to confusing. the usage of player skill descriptors without connotation is judgment neutral
take for example "Easy", which is only "Easy" for people who didn't just install the game. but for someone who is playing osu! for the first time, it's hard. same issue for "Hard".
"Normal". what does this even mean?
"Insane" has some bad connotations as it's a word applied with extreme emotion (calling someone "insane" can be compliment or an insult depending on context) and really ugly history (medical stigmatization, discrimination against the disabled)
"Extra" / "Expert" / "Extreme" are completely vibes. Extra comes from Touhou's Extra Stage. Expert is intuitive. "Extreme" I assume comes from other rhythm games. but the one that's the most intuitive here is "Expert" for a no restriction difficulty with more freeform skill expression
