If you messaged me and didn't get a reply, please notify me again. I might have seen it before but forgor to reply.
I'm also notoriously slow with my check. Feel free to request other BNs while waiting, and let me know if you have found a replacement.

Mapping / Modding
There is no such thing as bad patterns, only those used badly. To criticize something, you have to understand why it is first. How to be good at mapping/modding
Ask yourself, "What is the effect of x pattern?"
Start thinking more about what your map tries to make the player feel. The most valuable lesson I learned from my game designing experience is that it is not about the details but instead how those details evoke emotions from the player.
A map is all about your perspective of the song. Make it personal. Consistency is cool and ensures that your map's flow is cohesive, but it is not the key to a good map, and sometimes you don't even need to be consistent. I would call a map successful if it makes some people feel the same emotions as the mapper.
Same with modding. Do not only point out what is on the map. Everyone has basic observational skills, and only reiterating that is not helpful. Instead, mention how x pattern is detrimental to the mapper's vision. To do that, you have to try to understand what makes the mapper put these notes down as they did.
With the mindset out of the way, here are some things that you should also pay attention to other than ye olde consistency:

With the mindset out of the way, here are some things that you should also pay attention to other than ye olde consistency:
- Hand-movement: How does x pattern play on each hand's side? Is the feeling of hitting the pattern intense or not? Is it suitable with what the mapper is going for? Does it make sense with the current map flow?
- Contrast: Does putting x pattern next to y and z patterns have any different effect when x pattern is put alone? If yes, is that effect good or detrimental to the map?
- Focus: What is x pattern trying to focus on in the song? Is it the instruments, the vocals, or the feeling these elements provide?
- Break: Extended from contrast, break stands out a lot in a pattern. Spotlights only exist if breaks are there to let the players breathe and reflect on the pattern. Not enough breaks can leave the player feeling exhausted and overwhelmed from too many ideas, while too many can cause flow dissonance.
How to map dump
- Don't tunnel-vision. Know when to stop if an idea doesn't work out.
- Don't try to be consistent. Instead, focus on the minor changes in the song. It helps emphasize your flow more and makes it not boring to play.
- Don't just assign different repeated sounds with different snaps. Sounds are very dynamic, so focus on that instead.
- Do look at other successful dump maps first, analyze what makes them play so well, and then develop your dump style from them.
- Always remember that if you are new to mapping dump, it is not the same as mapping non-dump, so check your ego, and be ready to make many mistakes. You will learn what works and what doesn't through experience, just like how you learned mapping in the first place.
Bad habits to avoid while mapping
- 1/4 LNs are not a replacement for interesting patterns. You can use 1/4 LNs for visual aid, but don't rely heavily on it.
- Don't always go for comfortability. Uncomfortable patterns stand out the most. Use them to emphasize important sounds.
- Don't always end your LN where the following note starts. A gap or extended bit between them helps accentuate the sound more, guiding the players to move their fingers like you want them to.
- Don’t steamroll. A song usually consists of many complicated sounds layered onto each other, and to represent them all with the same pattern (usually happens with stream and jack map) really limits your creativity and is generally not fun to play.
- Have fun, don't burn yourself out!
Mapping Style
I love reinforcing motifs through repetition and their evolution, whether in idea, pattern, or emotion. You can surprisingly bring out a lot from just a single idea, so rather than incorporating as many ideas as possible shallowly, I want to be as concise and thoughtful with my one idea per map as possible.
How to be really good at mapping
Be interesting and have something meaningful to say lol. Don't try to do so many things at once - rather, focus on one thing, polish it, and make it shine. If you want to make a shitpost ultra-self-circlejerking map, double down, triple down, quadruple down, even. Don't shy away from doing the most shameless shit possible. Don't pretend your map isn't what it is, and just go for it. This requires you to be truthful with yourself and know exactly what you want, eliminating the noise in your head that confuses you about your objectives.

Favorite Maps
Updated Dec 1, 2025. Feel free to approach me on Discord if you want to talk about mapping (I might respond late cuz my work is pretty busy).I think a map is good when it manages to make an impression that lasts. I might not think about them consciously, but their impacts are everlasting on me. My favorite map list is a list of maps that have influenced me throughout the years. Sometimes maps come and go as I reflect upon them, but these maps are what made me the mapper that I am today.
