non rhythm games that have appeal that osu shares (try them out coz you might like them):

- geometry dash (music 95% mechanics games for people who want to do a lot of difficult things in a row and get a huge dopamine shot for it, as well as high intensity music at high emotional pressure + set playthrough length)

- iwbtg (90% mechanics games but these feel like actual standalone games instead of 'just' levels as part of one or 'just' training scenarios)

- kovaaks (100% mechanics game for improvement junkies)

- jrpgs (for number junkies, for people who like anime girls)

- maplestory (for number junkies)

- shmups (for people who want to do a lot of difficult things in a row and get a huge dopamine shot for it but instead of it being mechanics based it's based on concious effort to find optimal pathing or ways to percieve parts of the game, as well as high intensity music at high emotional pressure + set playthrough length)

- speedrunning (for improvement junkies who also want something to memorize and improve at by parts)

- literally anything where you are timed and the objective is to reduce the amount

- an instrument

- cs surf (for people who want to do a lot of difficult things in a row but improvement is a fair part both mechanics and pathing/routing, also turns into speedrunning after playing a map after beating it for the first time)

- celeste (base game, for people who want the feeling of doing a lot of difficult things in a row but are actually playing something where they're way more likely to eventually succeed than not)

- roguelikes (for people who want the feeling of doing a lot of difficult things in a row but aren't actually)

- the gym

- romhack nuzlockes (for people who want to do a lot of difficult things in a row and get a huge dopamine shot for it but instead of mechanics it mostly rewards game knowledge, creativity, risk assessment, and puzzling)

- yume (2)kki (for people who are the type to mass download random beatmaps from various years and enjoy most of what they see)

- gacha games (for number junkies, and people who like anime girls, and people who want the feeling of doing a lot of difficult things in a row but aren't actually

- gambling (for people who want the feeling of doing a lot of difficult things in a row but aren't actually)

- spotify (for people who like music but don't want pressure to perform)

thank you: pumpoff, yappers, o!ab, 435, and all of the people i've met along the way, you mean the world to me

inactive...
it seems like my head is forcing me to move on... something happened to me irl, and since then i've suddenly stopped thinking about the game, i suddenly stopped wanting to play, i get bored quickly when i try anyways, and i suddenly have no inspiration to map when it came so easily before, compulsively even. there have been periods where other things have captured more of my attention than this, but not where my head stopped paying attention. this feeling is also a familiar one... if my head is the same as it was, this is probably where i take a step back

maybe i'll have an urge to come back, but it's dormant right now..

assuming this may be the end, i believe i'm satisfied, i did just about everything i ever could've wanted to do... and i don't believe there will ever be anything that will replicate the feeling of the journey. my passion for the game, the friends i made, the emotions i felt... they were all real. i don't think i'll ever experience anything quite like this again. i love this game to bits, i will never forget this game and the people part of it, and i will treasure this part of my life forever
it was truly an amazing time!!

true playtime: current + ~450hrs (unsubmitted incl. practice diffs, mcosu)

if you want to compare improvement rate:
~120 hours of the 450 above (estimated from playcount) was spent relearning the game from low 6* aim (my skill level before the playstyle change was low 8* aim),
200 hours of bancho playtime was used playing for completion and/or farming medals (nov-dec 2020, august 2021, june/july 2024, aug 2025, late 2025)

general improvement truths that apply to all things, i'll update these as i find out more:

-look at people who are better than you and emulate them, reverse engineer their decisions, and why

-absorb as much knowledge as you can on anything you're interested at getting better at

-critical thinking is pretty important for decision making games

-exercising is incredibly important

-differnt activities need different approaches to learning and it depends a lot on the importance and speed of decision making. stuff like osu and other motor skills has no decision making, so you can roughly bruteforce for your desired result. there's games like league and overwatch which involve decision making but barely any time to think about a lot of them, so you need to conciously practice and isolate aspects of your play so that they become subconcious. a lot of study is simply repetition (use anki or something) and i've never tried a method for problem solving academic topics other than making a bunch of mistakes and fixing them one at a time, i haven't looked into anything more efficient for study

- practice should be consistent (day by day), it's significantly faster and more time efficient than sporadic. if you're juggling things, then extended bursts are better than doing things every few days randomly (i think).

- focus

- practice should be optimized for longterm even if it's aids and other things give better short term benefits, osu relevant examples: don't doubletap if you want to improve at speed even if it lets you place higher on lbs, play oni diffs as soon as you can in taiko even if muzus give more pp. this might seem obvious, but it's a common thing i see people doing if there's somehting like rank in a comp game on the line

- take breaks (like literally do nothing, no social media, no phone, stare at a wall) that are around a couple minutes long per hour of a session. your mind will consolidate new information when it's doing nothing else, said information is apparently time sensitive, and there's also immediate focus benefits. for osu in particular, while you might lose warmup if you do those mid session, you should still take a break after the session

- anterograde interference is a thing that exists and has only been recently documented, basically you cannot do similar (or directly opposite) actvities in the same ~6 hour timeframe or your head will retain significantly less, some paper has it at 0.5x at max effect. i'm still not sure to what extent and what counts as similar, but osu! and kovaaks directly interfere anecdotally (even though i play tablet!), and an example directly used in a paper had opposite memorization tasks conflict

ramblings.. for the people who are really interested in me..

god bless my friends

10/8/2024 | tuesday 12am
i wonder if i'll ever find something like 2021 osu again, i don't feel that strongly driven to improve at _anything_ anymore. it's at a point where i figure i'll be miserable (read: bored) for the rest of my life if i don't find something similar. improving isn't that fun when the task at hand feels fruitless

06/01/2024 | 8am on a saturday morning
mapping as a form is like my ultimate expression of love towards this game, so i wonder why i feel so much disdain towards it now. because of my nature as a human being, i've thought extensively about it. i've studied a lot of mappers, taken reference from people i look up to blah blah blah. point is, i cared a LOT. as a result of rigorous study (not really lol), i've come to realize the ultimate fruit of knowledge. the truepill. the holy grail of mapping.
that is: a completely braindead monkey can make something fun because osu's inherently fun and the only way to make it not fun is to make it annoying. as someone who has vocally complained about farm maps and maps that poorly represent the song since they were a new player, this the opposite conclusion. bland stuff is boring, only good stuff is fun. what happened to change me so drastically? well, a couple maps happened: shall we (a literal metronome to cross screen jumps) and what made me write this, mirai circuit. mirai circuit is basically completely randomly and arbitrarily mapped in the kiais. the only concious choices were to make it look like and play an old dnb map. i accomplished just that pretty much as well as i could for the amount of effort i put in, and the result was something that to me, as a player, has the exact same illusion and feeling as 'proper dnb' maps. the idea came to me after playing my old renatus map and thinking 'damn this last kiai is really fun' and wondering if i can fabricate fun. it was a complete success! i can fabricate my own idea of fun, and i can do it damn well. this isn't a boast post, i think the implication is interesting: fun mapping has no connection to the song, maps playing 'interesting' also have nothing to do with the song and is basically just aiming for 'predictable but not too much'. what's even the point of all of the theory when all of it's irrelevant? just do what's expected and add some zazzle. boom. huge map

11/13/2023 | 7am on a monday morning
im about almost at the same skill level that i was at before i switched to my new grip... never really realized how good i was. aim is reading? to an extent yeah. improvement is faster with good reading. it took me 5 months to get from 6.6* aim to 8.2* aim after having gotten to 8.5 aim before. But regardless, your performance is still mostly based in muscle memory. also now stand by the opinion that nearly every player from rank 4000 to top 20 is a similar skill level. the only stand outs are good at aim.

4/18/2023 | after playing terraria with fallenphoenix
i still stand by the importance of luck, but recently i've made a few ""revelations"" that make me wonder if most people are really trying very hard? are the top players just casual players who happened to get lucky? that honestly does seem really likely to me. this seems like a basic fact, but if you play 3 hours a day every day for 2 years, you will have somewhere close to 2200 hours of playtime. that's as much as most of the current top players, and most of them have played for 4+ years! now, osu probably deflates your "true" playtime by a fair bit and additionally doesn't count offline/unsubmitted play, but that makes me think. do most people just suck at "playing more"? the holy gospel of osu? i'm starting to think that the vast majority of the playerbase, including the ones that are """improvement focused""" flat out suck at the most important thing: dumping time into the game. it takes around 2-5 seconds for you to be able to play a map after you retry it. if you multiply your playcount by that number, that's a shocking amount of time spent only on retries! as of writing this, i have 110000 playcount not including unsubmitted play. 110000 * 3 = 330000 seconds. this is a staggering 93 hours!!!! 1/16 of my time spent playing osu is spent waiting for a retry to start! that's absolutely crazy! that's not even all of where time can be wasted. there's 1. breaks in maps 2. time spent in song select 3. time spent unfocused on the game during a period of a session. there's a LOT of time flat out completely wasted in a person's time in the game. It's no wonder a top player who has played for 5 years has an average of 45 minutes a day! from this point onward, i'm intentionally making all of my own sessions way more efficient: no discord, minimal retrying, rush song select and pick any random map. the only breaks are for stamina recovery, and maybe a 3 minute break hourly. i'm curious to see how it goes!!!

1/24/2022 | i was probably emotional over somethign
i probably own everything i value in my life to this game currently, this is the only game i find truly enjoyable, the people I've met in this game are the only friends I've had for the last 5 years, everything I've learned about my other interests indirectly comes from this game. I even learned how to improve at things from this game, as i was a clueless kid with no competitive drive. (from mapping, not at all from playing) perhaps the most important thing I've learned is the sheer importance of luck in an individual's success though. while this initially may give the impression that i don't believe in the value of hard work, from another perspective it lets me enjoy the company of other people without any genuine prejudice. if nobody really chooses who they become, then what's the point of seeing them differently? this mindset that I've always unconsciously have had has let me enrichen the friendships i have and make them so much more valuable to me, as i never ever consider an individual's accomplishments or talents in what i think about them. if you're even reading this, I'm probably your friend and it's true! i don't actually care about you as a player, i care about you as a person. you might ask, what's the point of trying? the point of trying is to find out why you care about things at all really. despite thoroughly hating every aspect of competition, competing in osu is one of the most most important things I've ever done. competition teaches you the realities of the world. competition teaches you how to value yourself and others and what they do. competition forces you to accept all of what happens
