About Me
I: INTRODUCTION

My friend SamPokLord got me into the game on September 30, 2016, where I began my little circle clicking journey. Slowly but surely I got better and better at the game, and I've come a long way since even though I've got a long way to go.

II: HIDDEN

Back in December 2016, I decided to play Hidden until I went back home to Massachusetts from Santa Barbara. I had intended to return playing “normally” with no mod afterwards. Unfortunately, my laptop was so weak that too many objects on the screen at once causes the game to lag unbearably, so if I wanted to play (which I did) then I had to play Hidden. I do not recommend this to anybody though; it handicapped my reading without hidden very hard for a very long time. Nowadays, I am very comfortable without hidden, but it was a rough process that included me not playing hidden for ~3 months in a row, and even now there are patterns I struggle to read without hidden compared to with.

III: MUSIC

My personal approach to osu! is not strictly as a game but also as a medium to enjoy music. I tend towards K-pop, metal, drumstep, neurofunk, etc. but I don't like to limit myself. There's a lot of great music in the game. I love using osu! to interact with the music I'm listening to, and sometimes find myself treating it more like an interactive visualizer than a game.

IV: MAPS

I've come to learn that I actually enjoy a lot of maps from a player perspective. My enjoyment of a song used to feel like it sometimes unfairly weighs into my judgment of the map itself, but over time I've come to learn that I actually just like maps on their own merit lol. I guess that happens when you get better at mapping and develop a more fleshed out mapping perspective. I started out mostly latching onto slider maps and ones with crazy gimmicks and exciting visuals, but nowadays my map palate has grown to be significantly more broad. Unique, challenging patterns that still feel like they fit the song are really cool to me, and though I respect any mapper making an effort to create “good maps”, my favourite ones are the ones that challenge the player in visually and rhythmically challenging ways with original concepts that really represent the song to me and don't compromise gameplay in an inorganic way. I've also come to love more neat, conventional, simple maps too though over time. I'm definitely of the party that believes “mapping is an art”.

V: PLAYSTYLE

I started playing with mouse and keyboard, using the S and D keys with my middle and index finger respectively. I almost exclusively used the S key though. My mouse sensitivity was 1600 dpi when I began, and has since dropped to 1000 dpi. Eventually I moved to J and K for a short time, and began alternating, but this was a short stint. I continued alternating, but relocated my fingers to R and T. I like being higher up on the keyboard, I learned, and it was at a horizontal distance that kept my left arm in a similar arc to my right. I began with single tapping with my index finger, then moved to alternating, and now I am back to single tapping, but I switch which finger I single tap with. Recently though, I've moved to B and N (from X and C and C and V; keys started chattering, noooo) since I learned I can stream more consistently on the bottom row. In February 2017, I started playing tablet. Throughout February I used exclusively tablet to learn it for non-osu! purposes, and that meant if I wanted to play osu!, then tablet it was. I hardly ever use my mouse to play osu! now, and generally only do so if I'm playing and relaxing on low difficulty maps. Since then, I've changed my tablet area multiple times, and I actually change it up fairly often. Snapping to notes feels more satisfying with mouse though, and generally I think that the cursor movement of mouse plays are more appealing to watch.

VI: GOALS

Have fun! And help others have fun too.

More specifically, my goals as a player are to become proficient in as many different skills as possible, and to continue playing more and more maps and get plays good enough to get maps I like into my top plays. I also enjoy farming for top 50s on maps (usually of 4.xx* or above in star rating) or using mod combinations that do not yet fill the leaderboard (e.g. +HDDT on a leaderboard where there are still +HDHR FCs in the top 50). Nowadays my goal is to make my top plays interesting and representative of as many of my skillsets as possible. Slowly, I am improving at various aspects of the game, but my rank graph sure doesn't show it. I just like playing!

As a mapper, I want to be able to inspire creativity in newer mappers and be able to help them progress, as well as learn to hone my execution in the editor while building ideas for concepts and patterns that are in some way distinct and interesting while always following the song in a coherent way. Mapping is super cool, and I want to get better at it more than I want to get better as a player.

FIRST PASSES

Note: Some of these may not have their star rating anymore, because they have changed in various reworks.

All passes/FCs are only counted for ranked maps or the tutorial.

First Pass: Peter Lambert - osu! tutorial [Gameplay basics] 0.67* (09.30.2016, 16:55:05)
Unremarkable.

First 3* Pass: AOA - Heart Attack [Saranghae] 3.44* (10.03.2016, 13:35:21)
If I remember correctly, this was the first time I felt like I'd actually accomplished anything worth anything in this game.

First 4* Pass: Capcom Sound Team - Dr. Wily Stage 1-2 [Insane] 4.15* (10.03.2016, 17:09:01)
I scraped by with the worst accuracy on this site of the galaxy, but a pass is a pass. My accuracy was so bad that even I wasn't excited about it though.

First 5* Pass: Sushi Killer - Zora [It's my pleasure to meet you.] 5.04* (11.07.2016, 16:41:35)
This one came out of nowhere. My friend and I were chatting and I was explaining how I liked this song, so I just decided to play it to show him. I ended up passing it, and after that it took me some time before I passed it again. Funny how that works.

First 6* Pass: Panda Eyes & Teminite - Highscore [Extra] +HD 6.01* (12.06.2016, 21:51:50)
My first landmark pass with +HD. It felt pretty good, and it took me a long time before I passed it again. Definitely felt like it came out of nowhere.

First 7* Pass: Ariabl'eyeS - Kegare Naki Bara Juuji [Vert's Twin Lunatic] +HD 7.00* (05.10.2016, 22:48:00)
(refer to Memorable Plays)

First 8* Pass: MomoKuro-tei Ichimon - Nippon Egao Hyakkei (TV Size) [Egao] +HDDT 8.47* (01.08.2020, 08:42:47)
Just kinda happened.

FIRST FCs

First FC: Peter Lambert - osu! tutorial [Gameplay basics] 0.67* (10.01.2016, 20:44:27)
Unremarkable.

First 3* FC: Titancube - Warp Drive [Insane] +HD 3.90* (02.28.2017, 17:36:16)
As you can see by the date, it took me a while before I started to care about FCs. Not much to say here otherwise.

First 4* FC: Capcom Sound Team - Dr. Wily Stage 1-2 [Insane] 4.15* (11.10.2016, 14:10:31)
I wanted an S on something at one point, and this map was nice and short so I figured sure, why not? Pretty forgettable.

First 5* FC: Telekinesis - The Monk [Technique of Shadow] +HD 5.07* (04.25.2017, 20:08:31)
Unremarkable.

First 6* FC: Hitorigoto -TV Mix- [Insane] +HDDT 6.10* (07.16.2017, 02:26:43)
Unremarkable.

First 7* FC: toby fox - Last Goodbye [Determination] +HDHR 7.05* (02.19.2020, 01:21:05)
It's a farm map but I actually worked super hard for this. Shoutouts to SamPokLord, the inspiration for me to get this play in the first place.

First AR11/OD11.08 FC: Koji Kondo - MAP4(Native Star) [Dax's Cha Cha Cha] 3.74* +HDDTHR (10.27.2017, 15:30:15)
Very cool accomplishment for me. I had been wanting to work on AR11/OD11.08 for a decent while, so it's cool to see it finally paid off in the form of an FC - even if that FC is on a 20 second <4.xx* map. I hope to continue pursuing goals in this esoteric AR/OD range.

MAPPING

First Map: Bill Burnett - Rudy's Got The Chalk (05.22.2017)
Complete garbage. Like, actual, utter garbage. Aesthetics are awful, playability is negative... nothing about this map is redeemable. I only made it to learn some of the most basic editor tools and get mapping already. Maybe someday I'll make a really good map!

First Fully Completed Map: HyperJuice - City Lights feat. EVO+ Jinmenusagi (Pa's Lam System Remix) (11.10.2017)
I can tell it's not exactly pretty, and playability is questionable, but some people find it fun I guess. It's still quite bad though - like, very very bad. I have plenty of room for improvement.

First Completed GD: ARM (IOSYS) feat. Nicole Curry - Come To Life(05.08.2018)
I feel like it's okay. There's a lot that could be improved. A big step forward though, even if I still suck.

I've made more maps but I don't feel like it's worth listing all of them here when you could just go to “beatmaps” section of my profile and see what I've made.

Memorable Plays
Krewella - Come & Get It (Nightcore Remix) [Rz's Hard] (10.03.2016, 15:52:21)
This was the first map that I remember being excited to pass. At the time it felt so fast, and hitting (read: not failing) some of the patterns was an incredible feeling. I'd finally felt like I had made a play that might look impressive to somebody who knows nothing about the game.

Team Nekokan - Can't Defeat Airman [Insane] 4.59* (11.07.2016, 06:16:52)
If Come & Get It was the first pass that I thought would impress other people, then this simpler map of Can't Defeat Airman was the first one that I thought would impress past me. Man did I feel the grind with this one.

Capcom Sound Team - Dr. Wily Stage 1-2 [Insane] 4.15* (11.10.2016, 14:10:31)
Getting an S on this map was one of those moments that warranted yelling and popping off, and was the first time that I ever felt particularly nervous towards the end of a map. A strange feeling that I would come to be very familiar with.

Girls' Generation - Gee [Pink me up] 5.74* +HD (01.16.2017, 21:41:52)
For a long while, my most played map, and the pass I wanted more than anything else in the world at the time. At one point, this map was the highest difficulty map that I had in my library. Watching Adamqs (?) play of it in HDHR and watching it in auto was mesmerizing, and I wasn't sure if I would ever be able to pass it. Currently, it's on my FC hit list.

Merengue - “Ano Hero to” Bokura ni Tsuite -noitama ver.- [Gu's Hard] 2.93* +HDNC (01.23.2017, 19:10:14)
When I got this score, I was insanely excited. Why? Because I had finally broken into the top 50 of a beatmap's leaderboard! People would see my username, my profile picture, my score - it was really exciting. I've set a few scores within the top 50 of other leaderboards now, but they never feel quite as special as this one.

Zedd - Clarity ft. Foxes (kamome sano remix) [This Song Is About a Tragic Love] 5.48* (04.28.2017, 20:04:34)
If Gee was the map I thought I would probably never pass, this was the map that I was relatively convinced was actually impossible. I was underwhelmed when I was able to pass it with relative ease, more upset with my dropped combos than happy with my pass at first. But now I can really appreciate how far I've come, and realize that passes on maps like this make my current stretch goals feel that much more reachable.

Ariabl'eyeS - Kegare Naki Bara Juuji [Vert's Twin Lunatic] 7.00* +HD (05.10.2016, 22:48:00)
I finally passed a 7* map! Back when I started playing, I didn't even HAVE any maps above 6*, so when I saw 7* maps for the first time I came to the logical conclusion that they were effectively impossible. Perhaps one of my favourite plays (despite the awful, awful combo), given the combination of the low play count (~15 tries), high BPM (260), and difficulty rating (7.00*), and something that very solidly nuzzles itself into my circle clicking journey as a pass that will not soon be forgotten.

Capcom Sound Team - Dr. Wily Stage 1-2 [Insane] 4.15* +EZ (05.25.2017, 19:25:21)
On this day, I set a #1 score on a mod leaderboard. Not just a #1 score, an eternal #1 score! I managed an SS with +EZ, the first and the only, on a map with no spinners. So I will hold the top spot of the +EZ leaderboard forever, and on a map that means a lot to me as a player. Other people could do it, sure. Tons and tons of other people, in fact. But at the end of the day they didn't, and so here I sit with a big fat (mod leaderboard) #1 that will be that way until the end of time. Feels great!

Oratorio The World God Only Knows - Secrets of The Goddess [The World Guy Only Knows] 4.74* +HD (06.09.2017, 20:33:19)
At the time of originally writing this (06.09.2017, 22:08:07), my favourite play by a large margin. But since then it's become less so, but I still love it quite a bit. And have improved on it! I learned a lot about my mentality during this run. My mind wanted to wander so many times:

“You could miss on these easy jumps.”
“You're gonna miss-acc this stream.”
“What if you slider break here? Wouldn't that suck?”

It psyched me out a lot, but towards the end...

“...you just did the hardest part, but stay focused!”
“...think about how great it'll feel to say you FC'd a 10+ minute map!”
“...you've never missed past this point you're gonna do it!”

+HDHR when?

Nightcore - Heaven Is a Place On Earth [Heaven] 5.74* +HDDT (0.7.28.2017, 01:15:18)
One of my favourite plays. A map I really like, a play I spent hundreds of tries to get, and something I felt really distinguished me from other players my rank. I have a desire to make myself feel unique among the thousands and thousands of users in this game, and I felt that this play helped me do that especially considering my rank at the time (~20k if I remember right). I popped off hard after this one, despite improving it multiple times since then.

This section has been retired in favour of my spreadsheet which you can find at the top of my profile page.

Mapper Respect (perpetually unfinished)
Easily one of my most respected members of the community. His content regarding mapping is incredible and such a gift to the community. Without him, I'm sure many newer mappers, aspiring mappers, or people just interested in learning about mapping concepts would be clueless with no hope of ever starting or keeping up with it. Despite not being totally on board with everything he preaches, pishifat gives me a foundation of understanding concerning some mapping topics. He exhibits a crazy amount of variety in his mapping and he shows his prowess in the form of his products very nicely. I used to not particularly like his maps as much, but has progressed incredibly far and showcases extremely respectable versatility in his more recent ventures. Fantastic contributor.

Perhaps the most influential mapper in modern mapping. Not a huge fan of his older style, but he's shown so much versatility in mapping that I can't help but stare in awe. At this point I'm curious as to what this guy can't map. Is there anything? Overall just a spectacularly talented and hard-working individual who catches more flak than he deserves. Across different mapsets, within the same mapsets, and obviously given maps like his Aspire one, Monstrata has more than proven that he is one of the few mappers who can combine seemingly endless artistic intuition with almost unparalleled editor experience. I give huge props to the work he puts in to create and rank as many maps as he does.

While I'm certainly not fond of every map from her, they all express the songs she chooses in such peculiar ways that keep maps feeling fresh and different. Her maps feel tailored to each song, with fewer through-lines than most mappers. I hold her in particularly high regard because of my personal enjoyment of her maps and her pursuit to create unique and challenging maps that venture outside of the box in terms of gameplay, visual design, and overall mapping concepts. She's certainly not the only one, but if you ask me, when it comes to pushing the envelope in representing music in unique mapping styles, there's no equal.

From what I can tell, one of the most influential mappers and one of the key figures in ushering mapping into its current, modern age. I personally love his style. Aside from that I can't say too much, but his influence, fairly consistent activity, and extensive catalogue of maps are more than enough reasons to give him a mention. His opinion on overmapping and undermapping really opened my eyes, and made me reconsider my opinion on maps like Mythologia's End.

One of the OGs from what I can tell. Some of his maps have undoubtedly given osu! Standard a huge amount of the popularity it's earned, making him a strong contender for one of the faces of osu! Mt. Rushmore. Two of his maps have given osu! a chance at bathing in the limelight and his continued activity in the community makes him one of the most active members over the years. I don't even want to know where this game and community would be without him. Oh, and I love his maps.

Always pushing the boundaries of star rating, Mazzerin has a very unique role in the community. His almost psychotic intrigue with mapping various styles of metal (technical death metal, melodic death metal, etc.) in the most rankably challenging means available to him is impressive. Pushing the players that are at the top to stretch their limits even further is great, and it's nice to see somebody catering to other aspects of my musical taste. I love how he maps streams, they feel like they have personality in the ways they twist, turn, overlap, and space in and out. I'm glad that the stars that Mazzerin pursues aligned, both in-game and out.

Beginning as a pretty basic mapper with comfortable flow and conservative visual design, ProfessionalBox has evolved into a bit of a mapping pariah, creating maps that arguably sacrifice gameplay elements in the pursuit of his vision for visual design. I love the music he chooses to map, and his overall polish on his maps is always palpable. At the very least, in terms of visually representing music, I think he consistently does a bang-up job.

Player Respect (perpetually unfinished)
Ekoro's proficiency in the niche mods is really incredible. His ability to memorize maps is mind-boggling, and his ability to read the unreadable seems only to be matched by the likes of people like -GN. Though it hasn't anything to do with him as a player, I also respect the amount of effort he has exhausted into mapping, creating some truly outstanding maps and contributing to the pool of low SR maps. He is one of my primary inspirations to begin learning +EZ and +FL.

Probably the most versatile player I've seen. He has plays that still stand the test of time as uncontested (until the snipers attacked), displays excellence in all aspects of the game down to +FL, and also creates some very unique and interesting maps. Though I wasn't around for his time at the top, he seems like a player who was absolutely enthralling to follow.

It's hard to contest a better player. This guy shows an inhuman level of mastery over nearly every facet of the game, and holds some of the most coveted #1 spots in its history. He's a very important figure that has a fascinating story behind him and an air of mystery that only adds to his circle clicking grandeur. I haven't much else to say aside from the fact that he proves to me time and time again to think twice before saying something is impossible.

An absolute freak player. He has some of the most unique scores of all time, and his reading and dedication to the strange plays he sets his mind to make it feel extremely satisfying to see him finally pull them off.

I mean, duh. He got me into the game, constantly challenges my own circle clicking ideology, and has such a pure and genuine love of the game it's heartwarming. His general interest in playing so many maps and achieving steady improvement and fluency in the more vanilla aspects of the game (aim, speed, hit accuracy, general pattern reading, general mod skill) is really cool. His mindset leaves him so open to enjoy so many aspects of the game and appreciate so many different viewpoints and plays. It's refreshing. Not only one of my best friends and favourite people, but one of my favourite players.

I don't know what's in the water in Canada, but I guess it makes people like +HD and tech maps quite a bit. Though Azer has left the game behind, his impact on me lingers and I will always look up to his plays, and maybe some day challenge some of them.

One of the gods of old, and like rrtyui, a player that I can't say I was around for at their relative peak. His reading skills and enormous number of scores are beyond my comprehension, and his comparatively “dated” skillset by today's standards makes him a particularly unique player. He seems like a fun person too. Not only can he read older, more “basic” patterns, but he can play them - and I mean he can really play them. +HDDT, +HDHR FCs on maps filled with no mod FCs on the same leaderboard. He's an absolute animal.

A player surrounded with dissenting opinions in the peak of pp mapping. Though his skill at farming is nearly impossible to contest, he boasts impressive performances outside of that on a wide variety of maps. +HDHR streams, +HD tech, +DT jumps, AR11/OD11 - the guy's clearly got a deep skillset. It's a shame that people can't see past the pp scores he sets (many of which are very impressive in their own right), because there is much more to him than the numbers in his top scores. His drive to improve will undoubtedly cement his name into the osu! Standard history books even further, and with many years ahead of him, it's exciting to imagine what kinds of scores he will be setting in time to come.

A cool guy with a lot of interesting opinions on the game, and a respectably holistic view on a lot of aspects of the game. His self-awareness combined with his well-developed opinions and demonstrably incredible skill at so many skills in the game make him hard not to like. He's also done a lot for the community, notably reviving Project Loved and taking it in a direction that many more players are receptive to compared to its original incarnation.

Favourite Maps
CURRENT FAVOURITE
Such an amazing map. It takes an understated part of the song to justify its rhythmic choices, and from those rhythmic choices crafts an intense experience that attempts to capture the calm yet fierce tone of the song. Distinctly different decisions regarding rhythm, object choice, visual design, and movement across different parts of the song make it feel perfectly tailored to each moment. One of the best examples of a creative map that takes an unorthodox approach to mapping to represent the soul of the song in question.

Other favourites in no particular order include...

  1. Camellia - d:For The Delta [Delirium] by ProfessionalBox
One of my favourite Camellia songs and map that's decently technical but still feels very natural to acc. All of the sliders are intuitive to read and all of the streams feel perfectly spaced and placed. It's hard to even tell this is a collaborative thanks to ProBox and toybot's phenomenal synergy. A wonderful map that feels very tightly put together that challenges me in a variety of exciting ways.
  2. SirensCeol - Nightmare (Maxin Remix) [Another] by galvenize
Lovely song with a lovely map. Lots of short burst streams at a comfortable BPM and a subtle symmetry makes this map a real breeze to play through, almost like it's helping you pass it. A staple map, if you ask me.
  3. Ocelot - Tsubaki [EX EX] by Hollow Wings
Unbelievably cool concept map that still feels like it manages to fit the song. There aren't any other maps out there like this one, which is probably a good thing considering how oddly it flows and how challenging it is to read. Thankfully the song choice is on point here. I can see why mappers love it.
  4. lapix - Live Nor Die ft. Kanae Asaba (Nhato Remix) [a ja nhato jak na lato] by Akali
There are so many patterns that I've never even seen before in this map. It's an incredibly cool song, with a super cool map attached to it. I'm a sucker for technical maps and songs with lots of interesting melodic progressions, as well as cool an challenging patterns that don't compromise fitting the music. This one hits it big with me.
  5. Billain - Boogie [Edge] by Spaghetti
Great collab concept and masterful execution. A repetitive song tackled by some great mappers with different takes on the same rhythms, each with a strikingly different interpretation that still manages to all blend into a coherent final product. Each mapper brings pieces of their signature style into this collab to make it feel like quite the journey.
  6. Caramell - Caramelldansen (Speedycake Remix) [LESJUH DIFFICULTY!!] by 0_o
Perhaps an unorthodox pick. This guest difficulty by the legendary lesjuh is one of the most enjoyable maps I've ever played. Especially within the context of it being an older map, it has great aesthetics, intuitive patterns, and generally fluid movement. One of the few maps I can name that I don't believe has a single dull moment.
  7. Sota Fujimori - Move That Body -Extended Mix- [Extreme] by Skystar
One of the first maps that really just blew me away with its creativity and aesthetics. Completely one-of-a-kind flow, visually captivating patterns, and some outstanding hitsounding make this map an unmissable treasure.
  8. Traktion - The Near Distant Future [Lapse] by RLC
Wonderfully mellow map that feels smooth to play and certainly doesn't feel as long as it is. It's a pleasant ride all the way through, and with time it's aged quite gracefully. Not a moment feels “undermapped” or “overmapped”, lending a palpable sense of legitimacy to each pattern and object placement which pays off in dividends in a map of this length.
  9. CLIFF EDGE - The Distance feat. Nakamura Maiko [Apart] by Modem
A simpler map that has a lot of diverse movement and an intuitive, enjoyable rhythm to follow. I usually can't appreciate the movement that goes into maps because oftentimes they are too challenging for me, but the way this map handles it is very immediately noticeable to me and also something I like quite a bit. I'd love to see more maps like this.

Old favourites...
  1. ...kradness & Reol - Remote Control [Max Control!] by Taeyang
Exciting difficulty spikes in the jumps with enough variety in the filler to keep it engaging. I don't love it like I used to, but the map stands as a great example of a wide array of elements that made the game fun, at least for me.
  2. Twice - Cheer Up [SHASHASHA] by Euny
Extremely solid flow. Not much to say other than the fact that the map is really fun, and that the spacing feels pretty much perfect.
  3. Utada Hikaru - Sakura Nagashi (el poco maro Remix) [Eternity] by ProfessionalBox
A beautiful song with a beautiful map to accompany it. ProBox and Asphyxia's style complement each other extraordinarily well. Along with the map itself being great, the storyboard adds a subtle but much appreciated atmosphere to the entire experience. Probably one of the “smoothest” maps ever made by my judgment.
  4. Our Stolen Theory - United (L.A.O.S. Remix) [Infinity] by Asphyxia
Few other maps make me truly feel like I'm playing the song than this one. It flows beautifully, has intuitive and engaging difficulty spikes, and tests consistency to an impressive degree. Excellent, excellent map.
  5. Traktion - Mission ASCII [Another] by galvenize
A straightforward song perfectly fit to galvenize's style, resulting in a gratifying, comfortably flowing, straightforward map. If people ask me what a good example of a mapper picking a perfect song for their style is, I would direct them here.
  6. xi - Freedom Dive [Another] by Nakagawa-Kanon
A classic map. I love the old school-ness of it.
  7. Hanatan - Airman ga Taoesenai [Insane] by Natsu
A comfortable and balanced map. It's robust and has an organic flow that feels intuitive to follow. One of my first loves in this game.

Songs I'd Love To See Mapped
Maybe even by me (lol fat chance on a lot of these I suck ass at timing)! If you map any of these songs to completion let me know. But if I don't like the map I will be sad sorry just being honest lol.

Agalloch – A Desolation Song
Alexandre Desplat/Jarvis Cocker – Fantastic Mr. Fox (Petey's Song)
Algernon Cadwallader – Spit Fountain
