A short rant about key counts from 1k to 10k. I am not considering n+1 play styles (only symmetrical layouts). Enjoy!


1k - Spacebar molesting.

2k - Play Muse Dash instead (or just taiko).

3k - why

4k - By far the most popular key count for a good reason. Not to mention it's long history, it's waaay more interesting than lower key counts. You also literally use 4 of your best fingers. It's also by far the easiest one to learn out of the ones that are actually relevant.

5k - A combination of 7k's thumb usage which many people dislike and somewhat limited range of 4k. It's still pretty fun though

6k - To add another finger on both sides is a natural continuation of 4k that everyone likes, the obvious next step. The ring finger may be weaker than middle and index, but not that much (way stronger than pinky). As a result you get a lot of new mapping possibilities with wider horizontal axis. 6k is awesome.

7k - The classic. The maximum farming power. A lot of keys without awkward pinky or double thumb usage. People who don't play VSRGs think you're a piano player. Makes you feel better than people who can only play 4k even though you're shit compared to them (don't forget to mention that you main 7k in every 4k multiplayer lobby).

8k - I don't like it, because you only add one key to 7k and you have to pay a lot for it. You either play with two pinkies (just play 9k instead), or two thumbs (just play 10k instead unless you really hate using pinkies).

9k - Okay hear me out, 9k makes sense because you use a ton of your 7k experience, just adding another layer. However do you really want to use ALL of your fingers except ONE?. Like what did that one thumb do to you that you wanna leave it alone like that.

10k - God has given human 10 fingers so human can play 10k. Let's not oppose God's creation.
